Big Island Video News shows footage of the house fire ignited by lava in Pahoa, filmed by Mick Kalber of Tropical Visions Video aboard Paradise Helicopters.
The lava flow creeping toward the Hawaiian community of Pahoa has claimed its first house, Hawaii County civil defense officials said Monday. A breakout “finger” from the flow remained behind the front, but traveled more than 15 yards in about an hour, making direct contact with the home and setting it ablaze.
According to an NBC News interview with Darryl Oliveira, the Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator, the house has been empty since August. Tenants moved out in preparation for potential evacuations when lava began encroaching on the town. The house is located about a half-mile from its closest neighbors in an agricultural part of town.
