Textures of lava…

A mind blowing sampling of textures created by molten lava on a recent lava charter!

Pillowy…   A vigorous breakout of pahoehoe has an unusual surface of pillowy folds.
DEEP…   This skylight high on Pu‘u ‘O‘o’s north flank is a window to its fiery depths.
Smooth and ropey…   The crusted edge of a flow gives way to the pressure beneath, releasing an oozing mass of smooth, ropey pahoehoe.
Rough around the edges…   The waning breakout oozes slowly, cooling rapidly, hardening with a rough, textured surface.
Stringy and drawn out…   The apex of a flow oozes lava as its surface quickly cools, creating long stringy fingers along its trailing edge.
