Lava Update | June 5, 2018

Lava Update for Tuesday, June 5, 2018, 5:45 am – Kilauea’s east rift zone overflight:

Heads up, the photos below show the ravaged remains of Kapoho, and also a couple of homes being taken by the lava. My apologies in advance, no insensitive intentions here, just historical documentation of this life altering event. It is my hope that proper photojournalism will bring about awareness of our community’s dire struggles and need for assistance.

Kilauea’s eruption on the lower east rift zone continues, as profuse effusion of lava from fissure 8 feeds flows that have inundated the coastal communities of Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland, and filled Kapoho Bay. A new delta of land now exists where the mouth of the bay used to be. See the latest photos below.

Please continue to pray for the residents of Puna, as thousands of individuals have had their lives altered forever.

At daybreak, most of the Vacationland community had been overrun by lava, with just a few homes remaining, as lava advanced to the Waiopae tide pools.
A couple homes burst into flames from the intense heat of the ‘a‘a flow.
Two homes burst into flames, as the intense heat from the approaching ‘a‘a flow ignites them.
A little cluster of homes still stand between the two lobes that moved through Vacationland and Kapoho Beach Lots.
A view looking north over Vacationland and Kapoho Beach Lots. Note how part of the flow has completely encircled Green Mountain.
A bird’s eye view of the devastation at Kapoho beach lots and Vacationland.
Fissure 8 continues to effuse a tremendous volume of lava, feeding a massive river that stretches to the sea.
The Puna Geothermal Facility remains surrounded on three sides by lava from this eruption.
